I am absolutely thrilled to be featured in French Morning London. French Morning London is one of UK’s leading news websites for the French-speaking community. The article explains how I created Yalding Media. I have included below an English translation of the original article (if you wish to read the original version in French, please click here).

From strategy consulting to videography

After finishing his studies in economics, Guillaume probably never thought he would come to reinvent himself as a professional videographer. Having worked as a freelance strategy consultant for around twelve years, the Frenchman took a fresh start and created Yalding Media in January 2018. Since last July, he has been running the digital communications agency full-time and is now in charge of some video projects for the prestigious King’s College London. This new career path opens up new business opportunities for the 38-year-old entrepreneur.

A strategy consultant turned youtuber

Born in Melun, a Paris suburb, Guillaume earned a ‘baccalauréat’ in science in 1999 before enrolling in an economics degree at the Panthéon-Assas University. He subsequently completed a master’s degree in finance in 2004 and he went on to complete several internships in banking. However the Frenchman did not enjoy the intense workload and long working hours and decided to come to London in 2006. “I thought it would be a good experience to live in the UK for a few months to improve my English skills and I ended up staying in the country even though it took me a few months to get my first job”. During this time, the young man made a modest living by teaching French to Britons.

Once properly settled in London, he started to work as a business strategy consultant. The latter, which consists of providing strategic advice to corporations, is a much smaller sector in France.

Two events eventually encouraged the Londoner to take up videography professionally. The first was in 2014 when Guillaume launched a YouTube channel (now dormant) dedicated to cooking recipes. “I didn’t know anything about videography but this gave me the opportunity to learn how to film and edit videos”. He enjoyed the whole experience so much that he decided to upgrade his filming equipment. Then in 2017 having observed the poor quality of many promotional videos on the internet, he realised that he could offer something better and decided to make the switch to a new career.

“I feel like a craftsman”

At the beginning of 2018, while still consulting, the Frenchman launched Yalding Media. He improved his technical skills by collaborating with local personalities for whom he made free videos, “It was a win-win strategy,” says Guillaume who quickly built up technical knowledge. “From my previous work experience I understand how important it is to listen carefully to clients in order to meet their expectations”. “A good video is a tremendous marketing tool for any business”, explains Guillaume.

Over time, Yalding Media grew its customer base and now has business from larger clients such as King’s College London. Since last July, the young entrepreneur has been working on video projects full-time, covering events and conferences as well as working on promotional campaigns. Guillaume clearly enjoys his new job and particularly likes “filming people who are passionate about what they do”. He feels “like a craftsman who is fortunate enough to experience the joy of video creation from start to finish”.

According to Guillaume, the business will be able to expand even more by developing a reputation for quality in a sector, which is “very competitive”. This is a new challenge for the Frenchman who is now looking to offer his services to French start-ups looking to grow internationally.
